Chapter 75: You’re Quite Unlucky Too
Mo Bei produced two blankets from who knows where, and Yan Yichen quickly took them, draping one around Meng Yier, who was soaked through.
She avoided his touch, snatching the blanket from his hands and wrapping herself up tightly.
“I can do it myself.”
Meng Yier was still fuming over how Yan Yichen had caused her to fall into the water just now, and her tone was inevitably cold and distant.
A wry smile flickered in Yan Yichen’s eyes, but he still nodded.
“Miss Meng, I didn’t expect our second meeting to be quite so… unforgettable.”
Mo Bei looked at Meng Yier with a half-smile, his tone full of teasing.
Meng Yier managed an awkward smile, then turned and shot Yan Yichen a fierce glare, her eyes brimming with resentment.
“I didn’t expect it either… Mr. Mo, I’m sorry for all the trouble today, but it’s all thanks to a certain someone here.”
Mo Bei smiled slightly, as if he understood everything, and, with his back to Yan Yichen, said quietly,
“Miss Meng, you have my deepest sympathy. We’re both in the same boat—my days aren’t any easier than yours…”
“Oh, Mr. Mo, you really are unlucky as well…”
“By the way, Miss Meng, you can just call me Mo Bei from now on. Since you’ve just returned to the country, if you ever need anything, feel free to come to me. I’d be happy to help.”
Meng Yier smiled faintly and replied,
“Alright, thank you, Mo Bei. And please, don’t call me Miss Meng anymore—it feels strange. Just call me Xiao Yi.”
Although this was only her second meeting with Mo Bei, she felt an inexplicable sense of familiarity with him, as if they were old friends.
Watching the two of them chatting and laughing together, Yan Yichen’s dark eyes seemed ready to erupt in flames.
What was happening here?
Were the two of them treating him as if he were invisible?
And calling each other so intimately!
“Drive—” Yan Yichen turned to Mo Bei, his gaze meaningful and cold, his tone laced with warning.
Mo Bei smiled helplessly, but still nodded, got into the driver’s seat, and started the engine.
“Xiao Yi, sit tight, we’re leaving.”
Yan Yichen’s handsome face was clouded as he turned to look out the window, saying nothing more.
When they arrived downstairs and Meng Yier searched for her keys, she realized her backpack had been left at the animal hospital. Her phone, wallet, and keys were all inside—it was humiliating to find herself unable to even get into her own home.
“Mo Bei, go to the animal hospital and bring back Furball and Miss Meng’s bag.”
“Mo Bei, I’ll go with you…”
The thought of being alone with this ice-cold man made Meng Yier deeply uncomfortable, not to mention that just moments before, he’d caused her to fall into the water.
Right now, all she wanted was to stay as far away from him as possible.
The farther, the better!
“No—” Yan Yichen refused coldly.
“Why not? This is my choice, I can go wherever I want…” Meng Yier argued, unwilling to give in.
They stood there facing off, sparks flying between them.
“Choice? Don’t forget, for today and tomorrow, your time still belongs to me. Where do you get this so-called freedom?”
“You… I insist on going. What can you do about it?”
“Are you sure you want to go out looking like this? The fans who lost track of us can’t find me, but someone knows our Furball is still at the animal hospital. Do you think they won’t go there, waiting for us to walk right into their trap?”
Meng Yier hesitated for a moment. He was right. Even though she was innocent in all this, she had seen firsthand how crazed those fans could be. If she were to run into them again, they certainly wouldn’t let her off easily—it would only bring more trouble.
“They…”
“That’s right, Xiao Yi, Yichen is right,” Mo Bei added.
Meng Yier considered it for a moment longer before finally saying,
“Then I’ll trouble you to make a trip, Mo Bei.”
Though she didn’t relish the idea of being alone with Yan Yichen, she wanted even less to face another bout of chaos. She knew perfectly well which option was the lesser evil.
“Alright.”
Mo Bei and Yan Yichen exchanged a discreet look, and then Mo Bei left.
Yan Yichen stood where he was, watching as her slender, stubborn, and aloof figure receded into the distance. A glimmer of light flashed in his deep eyes, the corners of his lips curled into a faint smile, and with a soft chuckle, he followed after her.
