On the bed in her bedroom, Meng Yier lay sprawled out, not even bothering to take off her slippers. Even now, her mind felt muddled; she couldn’t be sure if everything that had just happened was real.

She’d been proposed to?!

And the person was Ke Sen!

The thought of it left Meng Yier with conflicting emotions. Her brow furrowed tightly, and she couldn’t even tell what she felt.

Was it excitement? Or joy?

Perhaps a little of both, or maybe neither.

It was Ke Sen, after all. She thought she ought to be happy—he was the idol she had admired for so many years. Yet, her temples throbbed uncontrollably, and it felt as if a fire was burning in her heart, restless and uneasy.

Irritation?

Yes, she was agitated.

She felt lost. Having never been in a relationship before, Meng Yier didn’t even know what she truly felt for Ke Sen. So she had no idea how to handle any of this.

Her beliefs had always been that marriage was the natural culmination of two people in love. Could feelings really be cultivated after marriage? She recalled Ke Sen’s expression as he spoke to her—sincere, earnest, his eyes filled with steadfast conviction.

He was so certain.

Perhaps, she thought, she really could give it a try.

Meng Yier turned the events of the evening over and over in her mind, unable to make sense of it, unable to decide, her head aching.

She tossed and turned all night, unable to sleep.

The next day

Meng Yier was roused from her restless sleep by the sound of her phone ringing. After a night of tossing and turning, she had only dozed off lightly when dawn was breaking.

Eyes closed, she groped for her phone on the bedside table. Her long lashes trembled as she forced her eyes to open just a crack.

“Hello…” Her voice was lazy and weary.

“Is this Miss Meng?” A sweet, clear female voice came through the line.

“Mmm…” Meng Yier replied, her tone weak.

“Miss Meng, this is StarMedia Entertainment Agency. We’re pleased to inform you that you are invited to interview for the position of Chief Stylist at three o’clock this afternoon.”

Interview?

Meng Yier pressed a hand to her throbbing forehead and vaguely remembered submitting her résumé to this company on a job site two days ago.

“All right—”

Throughout the call, Meng Yier kept her eyes shut. After hanging up, her eyelids still felt heavy. She tossed her phone aside and sank back into sleep.

——

When she finally woke naturally, it was already midday.

Well-rested, Meng Yier’s face was content, but as soon as she recalled Ke Sen’s words from last night, her brow knitted fiercely, her rosy lips pressed together, and she let out a long sigh.

She thought for a while, but still had no idea what to do.

Just as she was at a loss, Meng Yier suddenly remembered the call that morning.

The interview!

Meng Yier instinctively glanced at the clock—12:40.

Good, there was still time.

She had no time to dwell on the headache-inducing matter, so she quickly washed up and grabbed a bite to eat.

Since the position was Chief Stylist, Meng Yier took special care with her appearance, applying a delicate, natural makeup and dressing both elegantly and appropriately.

The location for the interview was close by.

Meng Yier arrived at StarMedia Entertainment right at 2:50—perfect timing.

Following the receptionist’s directions, she made her way to the interview area, where she saw four or five people already waiting in the lounge.

She found an empty seat, let out a long breath to ease her nerves, and waited quietly for her turn.

Soon, the interviews began.

Meng Yier was the second to be called in. Her interview panel consisted of two men and one woman. They gave her polished look an appreciative nod.

When they saw on her résumé that she was a Parsons School of Design graduate, their attitude toward her became even more favorable.

After a few brief, relevant questions, Meng Yier responded with poise, every answer impeccable.

When the interview ended, the panelists murmured among themselves, nodding in agreement.

“Miss Meng, you’re hired,” the bespectacled interviewer said with a slight nod.

Meng Yier was a bit surprised; she hadn’t expected the interview to go so smoothly. Still, having a job gave her genuine happiness from the bottom of her heart.
