Chapter 56: I'll Leave Xiao Yi in Your Care
Two minutes later, Yu Mingxin hurried over, visibly anxious. “Xiao Yi, my father just called. My mother has fainted.”
Meng Yi’er was momentarily stunned. “How did Auntie faint?”
Yu Mingxin lowered her eyes. “It shouldn’t be serious, it’s just her old problem acting up.”
Meng Yi’er took her hand. “Come on, let’s go see Auntie together.”
Yu Mingxin gently pulled her hand free, squeezing it softly to reassure her. “No need, Xiao Yi. It’s late, and I won’t be able to see you home tonight. Please be careful on your way back.”
Meng Yi’er understood that Yu Mingxin must be frantic with worry, and that she herself could do little to help at this moment. She nodded. “Alright, I’ll visit Auntie tomorrow. You go ahead, don’t worry about me…”
Kersen stepped forward and smiled. “Miss Yu, don’t worry. Leave Miss Meng to me—I’ll see her home safely.” He nodded at Meng Yi’er.
“Very well, Mr. Kersen. Thank you for taking Xiao Yi home.”
Kersen bowed slightly. “Miss Meng is a friend of mine as well, so you needn’t thank me.”
“Mingxin, drive carefully—”
“I will, don’t worry—”
With that, Yu Mingxin hurried away. Meng Yi’er watched her departing figure, concern clouding her face.
What could have happened to Auntie?
Kersen noticed her worry and met her gaze with gentle eyes. “Everything will be alright, Miss Meng. Please don’t worry too much.”
Meng Yi’er looked into his gentle blue eyes and nodded almost involuntarily.
Kersen glanced at his friends, then turned back and patted Meng Yi’er’s shoulder lightly. “Wait for me a moment—”
Meng Yi’er nodded. She watched Kersen join his friends, who whispered among themselves. The two young men and one woman glanced her way, their eyes filled with curiosity and surprise, and then they exchanged knowing smiles. Meng Yi’er felt a little awkward under their scrutiny, smiled politely, and waved to them. The trio nodded to Kersen, spoke a few more words, and Kersen looked up, meeting Meng Yi’er’s bright eyes with a gentle smile before returning to her.
“Let’s go, Miss Meng—”
Meng Yi’er hurriedly stopped him. “Mr. Kersen, I can take a cab home myself.”
Kersen smiled and stepped closer. The distance between them was already small; now they were even nearer. His beautiful blue eyes fixed on hers as he spoke, “I’ve already promised Miss Yu. Would you have me break my word to her?”
A wave of pressure seemed to descend from above, her heart racing and cheeks flushing. She nervously stepped back, waved her hands, and pointed to his friends. “It’s not that, I just don’t want to delay your business.”
Kersen laughed softly. “You won’t. Everything that needed attending to has already been handled.”
He turned and walked away. After a few steps, he realized Meng Yi’er hadn’t followed. He looked back and smiled at her, his voice low and alluring. “Come on—”
Meng Yi’er hesitated for a moment, then hurried after him. Side by side, they left the Western restaurant.
At the entrance, night had already fallen, but the street was brightly lit. Kersen raised his hand to hail a car, and soon a luxury vehicle pulled up before them.
Kersen opened the left door, inviting Meng Yi’er inside, then got in through the right.
The car sped towards Riverside Garden, stopping below Meng Yi’er’s building. They both got out.
“Thank you for bringing me home—”
“No need to thank me, Miss Meng—”
“And, thank you again for last time. Did you receive the clothes?”
“Miss Meng, wait—” Kersen seemed to recall something, and returned to the car.
Soon he emerged, holding an elegant paper bag. Meng Yi’er recognized it as the one Kersen had used on that rainy night to carry the clothes.
But she had already had the clothes dry-cleaned and sent back by courier.
“Miss Meng, I told you the clothes were a gift. Why did you return them?” Kersen said, handing her the bag.
