Chapter 141: The Wounds Within His Heart
Meng Yi'er watched his hazy eyes in terror, feeling his heavy, ragged breathing. Just as she despairingly closed her eyes, she felt the pain in her gripped wrist ease. Confused, she opened her eyes to see Yan Yichen collapse like a deflated balloon, his heavy, burning body pinning her down.
Had he fainted?
Meng Yi'er looked skeptically at his handsome face beside her ear. His cheeks were flushed, his eyes were closed, and his brows were tightly furrowed; it seemed he had lapsed back into unconsciousness from the fever.
Breathing a sigh of relief, she gave him a gentle nudge. "Yan Yichen—"
After calling out a few times with no response, she was certain he had fallen back into a deep sleep. She dared not move too much, terrified of waking him and reigniting his bestial instincts.
It wasn't until she felt breathless under his weight that she had to struggle to move him off her. She sat up, gasping for air.
"You jerk—"
Watching him lie there quietly with his eyes closed, looking perfectly harmless, she felt a strong urge to give him a good beating.
Forget it, she wouldn't hold it against him. If it weren't for the fact that he was sick and delirious, humph...
Meng Yi'er didn't dare touch him again, only occasionally checking his forehead with the lightest of touches to ensure his temperature wasn't rising.
She made up her mind: the fever reducer was effective for four hours. If his temperature hadn't dropped by then, she would have no other choice but to find a way to get him to the hospital.
Time ticked by, and by two o'clock in the afternoon, Meng Yi'er was pleasantly surprised to find that his body was no longer burning. The flush on his cheeks and body had gradually faded, and his breathing had become much steadier.
Finally at ease, she headed to the kitchen, intending to warm up some food before waking him.
Yan Yichen opened his eyes, feeling much less discomfort. The sudden sounds from the kitchen made him bolt upright. That girl was actually here—did that mean everything that had happened in his mind earlier was real? He had thought it was just a dream, but it had really happened.
Watching Meng Yi'er's busy figure, the corners of his lips curled up involuntarily. He stood up and walked toward the kitchen, stopping about a meter away, and stood there in a daze, watching her petite, slender figure in silence.
Meng Yi'er turned around after finishing her task and let out a shriek, startled by Yan Yichen standing right behind her.
Yan Yichen ignored her reaction and said coolly, "Why are you here?"
Meng Yi'er scoffed, "Do you think I want to be here? If it weren't for you..."
She decided to let it go; there was no point in complaining. She just wanted him to get well quickly so she could leave with peace of mind.
She changed the subject. "Are you hungry? I made some porridge—" she said, gesturing toward the rice cooker behind her.
Yan Yichen said nothing, just looked at her quietly, his face devoid of expression.
He sat down at the dining table and looked at the plain porridge with disdain. "You're feeding a patient this? When Aunt Wu was here, every meal had at least four dishes..."
Meng Yi'er felt her temper flare instantly. Forcing down her rage, she said softly, "This is all there is. Tell me, Mr. Yan Yichen, are you going to eat it or not?"
Yan Yichen had only intended to tease her. Seeing her strange expression, he realized she must be angry about him kissing her while he was delirious, so he didn't dare push her further, instead putting on an aggrieved, defeated look.
