Chapter 56
Chapter 56
The old lady’s room was decorated quite simply, yet every inch exuded an air of nobility. The scent of books filled the space, and the bookshelf was lined with various renowned works, including some in foreign languages.
Ye Fengyun picked up a book out of curiosity, glanced through a few pages, then shoved it back, uninterested.
He could recite all these backwards.
The butler, noticing his demeanor, frowned and thought to himself: Yet another impatient youth.
“This is my grandmother, the matriarch of the Lin family,” Lin Qinghuan said softly, gently holding the old lady’s withered hand, her eyes brimming with tenderness and sorrow.
Ye Fengyun glanced at the old woman—her complexion sallow, the space between her brows shadowed, her body emaciated like a dying candle flickering in the wind, barely clinging to life.
“Who hung that pendant by the bed?” Ye Fengyun suddenly asked.
Lin Qinghuan discreetly wiped the tears from the corner of her eye and replied, “My uncle did. It’s said he brought it back from abroad, and it’s been consecrated.”
Ye Fengyun took down the pendant and tossed it aside.
The butler reacted swiftly, catching it immediately.
“Young man, do you know what you’re doing?” The butler’s gaze turned icy cold.
Ye Fengyun replied, “I’m saving this old lady.”
“Watch your manners when you speak to the matriarch!”
Ye Fengyun looked exasperated. “You city folk are so troublesome. In short, if you want her to live longer, get rid of that pendant. And by the way, your so-called uncle is suspicious. I suggest you investigate him.”
As he spoke, Ye Fengyun rolled up his sleeves. “Alright, you’re not needed here. Leave the rest to me. You can all step outside now.”
He reached to lift the old matriarch’s blanket, but the butler caught his hand in a vise-like grip.
Ye Fengyun could sense the formidable strength in the butler’s grasp—a clear challenge.
Unfazed, Ye Fengyun smiled and said, “This is our first meeting, but there’s no need for such enthusiasm, is there? How long are you planning to hold on?”
With those words, Ye Fengyun suddenly exerted force. The butler’s strength was instantly countered and pushed back.
The butler’s expression changed dramatically.
This boy—although I held back, he shouldn’t be able to look so calm! Even if he is, he definitely shouldn’t be able to squeeze my hand in return!
It seems I’ve underestimated him.
The butler increased his strength, but to his shock, no matter how much force he used, he couldn’t overpower Ye Fengyun.
Ye Fengyun maintained his composure as they clasped hands, while the butler’s face flushed redder and redder.
Impossible. Absolutely impossible!
I’m already using my full strength, yet I can’t move him at all?
Could his abilities rival mine? But he’s so young, and I’ve been practicing martial arts for over twenty years!
A look of astonishment appeared on the butler’s face.
At just the right moment, Ye Fengyun released his grip, let go, and said with a smile, “We’ve shaken hands. Isn’t it time for you to leave?”
The butler steadied himself and replied coldly, “I admit you have some skill, but I will never allow you to face the matriarch alone.”
Ye Fengyun rolled his eyes. “Do as you please.”
The butler pressed on, “And why did you toss the pendant?”
Ye Fengyun answered, “There’s something wrong with it.”
Lin Qinghuan asked, “What’s wrong with it?”
Ye Fengyun replied, “Sorcery.”
“Sorcery?”
Everyone echoed him in confusion, their faces blank.
Ye Fengyun explained nonchalantly, “This old lady’s illness is no simple matter. Someone has placed a curse on her, and the source is that pendant. Also, take a look under her bed. I’m sure you’ll find something unusual.”
Skeptical yet curious, the group got down on the floor and peered beneath the bed. In an instant, what they saw there left them utterly aghast.
