The two of them talked from afternoon until evening, finishing an entire bottle of luminous wine between them.

During that time, Flora also had several plates of beef sent over to serve as an accompaniment.

“Aunt, I’ll be going back now. You should get some rest.”

“I know. Your second transport mission is in three days. Make the necessary preparations.”

“I understand.”

Velin lifted the curtain and gazed at the bright night sky, only to find Kyle sitting on a wooden crate not far away.

“Let’s go.”

Hearing Velin’s voice, Kyle, who had been lost in thought, immediately rose to his feet and naturally followed his master.

The two exchanged no words as they walked back toward the base in silent understanding.

The following morning, after Velin gave Layla a bottle of luminous wine, he began making thorough preparations for the journey two days later.

On April fifteenth, the second transport mission began.

According to information from the commander of the Fourteenth Transport Battalion, monster ambushes along the route had become increasingly frequent, whether on the way to the Sixth Legion or on the return journey to the Bajia Main Camp.

It made sense. With more and more people trying to take advantage of the chaos, even the monster clan leaders—foolish though they might be—had realized they needed to dispatch overseers to monitor the battle.

A grand convoy of three thousand five hundred men, carrying a month’s worth of supplies for the Sixth Legion, once again departed from the Bajia Main Camp and set out for the Sixth Legion.

…

Inside a cavern beneath an unnamed hill, the lizard warrior Guga, the leader of this territory, stood trembling before a dragonkin. The natural suppression brought about by their bloodline ranks forced him to struggle fiercely against his fear.

“Lord Nurul is extremely dissatisfied with your progress.”

“My lord, the human transport convoy is both numerous and powerful. Relying on gathered cannon fodder such as goblins, even with the effects of berserking black potions, it is difficult to inflict any meaningful damage.”

“So that is your explanation for why the other teams were annihilated while your forces have continued to grow?” the high-ranking Silver-tier dragonkin said expressionlessly.

Hearing the utter lack of emotion in the other’s voice, Guga shakily took three intermediate magic crystals from the cloth pouch he carried.

“My lord, this is a small token of my sincerity.”

The dragonkin warrior unceremoniously snatched the three intermediate magic crystals from Guga’s hand. His face remained devoid of expression, but a hint of pleasure entered his voice.

“I’ll give you one month. If you produce no results, prepare yourself to become the vessel of a dark battle beast.”

“Yes, my lord. I swear I’ll give it everything I have.” Guga was drenched in cold sweat as he hurriedly answered.

A dark battle beast was created through an evil dark spell that fused a soul into a body. Once one became its vessel, death was truly death; there would be no chance of ascending to the divine realm or descending into the River of the Underworld.

At that moment, the dragonkin warrior took out a bottle of potion and tossed it to Guga.

“This is an advanced version of the berserking black potion. Its duration has been reduced to one-third, but it increases combat strength fivefold. Make good use of it.”

“Thank you, my lord.”

The dragonkin warrior then departed alone. Watching his retreating back, Guga felt as though he had just taken a walk through the gates of hell.

Had it not been for those three intermediate magic crystals, his head would probably have been taken and used to intimidate the leaders of other territories.

Although both of them were high-ranking Silver-tier warriors, the gap between different races was beyond imagination.

“I’ll stake everything on this. Either I succeed, or I die. No matter what, I must not become the vessel of a dark battle beast.”

“Lizard God, please bless your faithful servant.”

Guga prayed to the deity for half an hour. After finding some solace for his mind, he began mobilizing his subordinates.

Three months earlier, when he had arrived here, he had possessed no more than two lizard warriors, fifty lizard soldiers, and one hundred and fifty lizard slaves.

Now, he commanded eight lizard warriors, three hundred lizard soldiers, eight hundred lizard slaves, and more than three thousand goblin cannon fodder. He refused to believe that, with the lives of so many monsters at his disposal, he could not annihilate a single human transport convoy.

For a time, countless monster figures emerged and began laying traps along the road carved out by humans, abandoning their previous perfunctory attitude of idling and shirking their duties.

At that very moment, the Thirteenth Transport Battalion followed its original plan: marching at sunrise and stopping only at sunset. So long as the sky had not yet darkened, they would not stop under any circumstances.

When they reached the Great Pit, a blue hunting falcon descended from the sky.

Kyle extended his arm and let it land there, then removed the letter from its leg.

“Master, the Sixth Legion’s base has been relocated. We need to alter our course,” Kyle reported swiftly after reading the letter.

“How far has it been moved?” Velin asked, his brow furrowing deeply.

“Previously, we were supposed to travel along the left side of the Great Pit. This time, we must go around the forest on the right and head northwest.”

“Then follow the instructions.”

Velin nodded and ordered the transport convoy to change direction.

Six days later, Guga calculated the timing carefully and led all his forces into the forests on both sides of the road, lying in wait as they silently awaited the arrival of the human transport convoy.

Yet they waited from nightfall until the following evening, and not a single human figure appeared on the road.

“What’s going on? Where is the human transport convoy? Where is it?”

As time passed, Guga grew increasingly agitated, repeatedly interrogating his subordinates.

“M-My lord, according to the reconnaissance reports from a month ago, this road is absolutely one the human transport convoy must pass through,” a lizard warrior answered, his head lowered and his body trembling.

“Then where is the human transport convoy? Tell me where it is!”

Guga seized the lizard warrior by the throat and kept demanding an answer.

“My lord, perhaps… perhaps the humans are moving more slowly than expected. They should arrive tomorrow,” another lizard warrior explained.

“Hmph. They had better be visible tomorrow, or else…”

Guga released the lizard warrior, who was nearly suffocating. The warning in his eyes was unmistakable.

Another three days passed. Guga’s eyes were bloodshot; he had gone five full days and nights without sleep.

Whenever he closed his eyes, he dreamed of becoming the vessel of a dark battle beast, slowly losing his soul and transforming into a dark beast possessing nothing but instinct. He would slaughter without fatigue until he died—truly died, in the fullest sense of the word.

“Should I run?”

The continued absence of the human transport convoy caused the thought of fleeing to grow larger and larger in his mind.

He swept his gaze over his subordinates, wondering whether any of them might be a dragonkin spy. He had to proceed with the utmost caution.

“You stay here and keep watch. I’m going back to the cavern to rest. Call me if you discover the human transport convoy.”

“Captain, you can rest here too,” one of the lizard warriors said, raising his head.

Guga’s eyes suddenly turned sharp, and without warning, he attacked the lizard warrior.

In an instant, his claws pierced through the lizard warrior’s chest. A still-beating heart appeared in Guga’s hand, frightening the other seven lizard warriors into retreating repeatedly as they assumed battle stances.
