Chapter 85: Leaving the Police Station
Sometimes Lin Fan truly wanted to tell Zhao Ying certain things, but every time the words reached his lips, he swallowed them back down. He did not know how to explain it. He could hardly tell her that he had fallen in love with two women at the same time. No woman would ever agree to share her man with another, and Zhao Ying was no exception. That was why Lin Fan had never said a word. He feared that once Zhao Ying knew, she might do something reckless.
No matter how he thought about it, though, Lin Fan knew that he had already fallen for Zhao Ying. That much was beyond doubt. So sometimes, the better Zhao Ying was to him, the less he knew what to do. Just like now, he could only keep his head down and eat... He was not good at expressing the feelings in his heart, and he did not really know how to express them either.
Suddenly, a policeman rushed in, looking panicked. "Director Li, Director Li, bad news! Captain Yan has been killed!"
At that moment, Li Kun, who had just come out of the detention room, changed color. "What? Say that again."
Li Kun was afraid he had misheard. No matter what, his brother-in-law was a police officer. How could he just die like that?
"It's true. Captain Yan was murdered last night. Someone came to report it this morning, so I went to take a look, and the dead person was Captain Yan. The person who filed the report said that last night they heard heart-rending screams coming from his house. Then this morning, someone who was curious went to check, and found that he was already dead. I've had the body sent to the morgue," the young policeman said, gathering his thoughts and recounting everything he knew.
Hearing this, Zhao Ying's face also changed drastically. She sprang to her feet in shock. She never expected Yan Dong to be dead.
Sun Wei lost his balance and fell straight to the floor. Originally, he had been counting on Yan Dong to speak on his behalf. After all, Director Li was his brother-in-law. But now that Yan Dong had suddenly died, he knew he was finished this time. At the very least, he would be driven out of the bureau.
Compared with them, Lin Fan showed no reaction at all. He merely sat there, still drinking soy milk.
Zhao Ying glanced at him in surprise, unable to understand why he was so calm, so calm it was as though he had known about this long ago.
Could this have been his doing? Impossible, absolutely impossible. He had been locked in the detention room all last night and had no chance to do anything. Thinking of this, Zhao Ying immediately rejected the shocking idea that had surfaced in her mind.
"Hurry and take me to see," Li Kun said quickly, then followed the policeman out. Sun Wei also scrambled up from the floor and stumbled after them. If he performed well enough, and if the director was in a good mood, perhaps he could still stay.
"What exactly did you do to offend? Even the city mayor has gotten involved," Zhao Ying said, then told Lin Fan about the conversation between Li Kun and Yu Jiang that morning.
In her view, her father getting involved was perfectly normal; after all, there were reasons tied to her. But why had her father's political enemy also joined in? And why had he even ordered Lin Fan to be shot dead, only to suddenly change his mind afterward? As a police officer, Zhao Ying knew this matter was definitely not as simple as it looked on the surface.
Lin Fan would never naively believe that Yu Jiang had told the bureau to release him because he was truly afraid Lin Fan would submit those pieces of evidence. That old fox would never be so kind-hearted. Still, he would not be able to jump around much longer. If Lin Fan had guessed correctly, Zhao Fanglin had probably already started making his move.
Lin Fan smiled faintly and did not answer the question. Instead, he asked, "If one day I offend the number one man in the country, what would you do?"
"I'd follow you. Wherever you go, I go. If you..." Zhao Ying started, then stopped, shifting her tone as she said, "With a face that rough, let alone offending him, you probably couldn't even get close enough to see him."
After Zhao Ying said that, Lin Fan was left with a head full of black lines. This girl really looked down on him too much.
But to be fair, he had actually met the leader before. Although at Falcon, every time the orders from above were conveyed by his uncle, the leader would occasionally come to inspect Falcon. As the youngest king among the Falcon Special Forces, Lin Fan had not only seen the leader, but had also shaken his hand.
Perhaps in other people's eyes that would have been something glorious and proud, but after the country abandoned Lin Fan, his mindset had changed completely. He knew he would never again be the same man who once placed national interests above all else.
"Right, with a face like mine, the women lining up to chase me could stretch all the way to the square," Lin Fan said. "I need to choose carefully and see who I should really pick."
"Hmph. If you dare mess around outside, I'll definitely cut you down," Zhao Ying said, even making a slicing gesture.
Lin Fan shook his head with a helpless smile. This girl was still as fierce as ever.
"I'm saying if. If there really comes a day when I..." Though the Dragon Soul had not yet taken root in Huaxia, Lin Fan knew that with its future development, and with Dragon Soul growing stronger in Huaxia, there would come a day when he would still have to face the country.
"There won't be such a day," Zhao Ying interrupted him directly. In her eyes, how could Lin Fan possibly become entangled with the Huaxia government?
"Don't worry. Even if that day comes, I'll be fine," Lin Fan said, the corner of his mouth lifting with faint confidence.
When the cart reaches the mountain, there is always a way across. Lin Fan believed that when the time came, he would handle all of this properly.
Zhao Ying looked at Lin Fan with suspicion, unable to understand why he had suddenly brought up the number one man in the country. "Have you figured out who wants to deal with you yet?" she asked. Right now, finding out who was targeting Lin Fan was the most important thing.
"Who else but our Young Master Wei? I've thoroughly offended him now, and he's even joined forces with the mayor to kill me," Lin Fan said with an eyeroll, showing not the slightest trace of fear.
"Wei Liang? How could it be him? You didn't really break out of prison yesterday, did you? Otherwise, how would you know it was him?" As expected of a police officer, Zhao Ying's mind turned quickly.
Lin Fan gave a light laugh. "If I hadn't gone out, how could I have found out it was him? And how could I have turned the tables on him?"
"So it really was him. How could the mayor possibly listen to him that much? Do you have some sort of grudge with the mayor too? Otherwise, why would they team up against you?" Zhao Ying asked.
Lin Fan could not help but smile wryly. Did killing someone have to be based on some private grievance between the two sides? Take those assassin organizations, for example: as long as you paid them, they would kill whoever you wanted.
"I only just came back to T City and don't even know him. How could I have any grudge? The reason he's targeting me is because he accepted some benefits from Wei Liang. But their good days won't last long either," Lin Fan knew that with only that one video of Yu Weihuai's misconduct, the threat against Yu Jiang was not enough. Wei Liang had certainly given him other advantages as well.
"Then where were you before?" Zhao Ying had not paid any attention to Lin Fan's words after that. She only wanted to know about his past.
"Africa," Lin Fan said, stretching lazily. "All right, time to go. I'll tell you about my affairs later. We can't exactly spend the night here today, can we?"
As he spoke, Lin Fan looked Zhao Ying up and down, the meaning unmistakable enough for any woman to understand.
"Africa where? That's a place where war breaks out all the time," Zhao Ying said. She was fairly well informed, and as soon as Lin Fan mentioned Africa, she immediately thought of conflict and unrest.
"It's fine. Didn't I turn out alive and well?" Lin Fan said, and the two of them walked out together.
Seeing that Lin Fan did not want to say more, Zhao Ying took out her phone and called her father, telling him that Lin Fan had been released, and also relaying the matter concerning Yu Jiang.
Zhao Fanglin was also surprised that Yu Jiang would suddenly change his order, but surprise was surprise. He still told his daughter that he had obtained evidence of Yu Jiang's corruption and bribery. Doing this was nothing more than using his daughter to see whether the evidence had been sent by Lin Fan.
"My dad says he already has evidence of Yu Jiang's corruption. Don't worry, my dad will take care of everything," Zhao Ying said.
Oh, so he really ought to find a chance to visit his future father-in-law, Lin Fan thought to himself.
Along the way, the people in the bureau were all discussing Yan Dong's death. They said he had been crippled by someone, and that before he died he had even been made into a eunuch. Did he perhaps commit some wicked deed, or offend some powerful faction? There were all kinds of rumors. It seemed the police bureau had no shortage of gossips either. Lin Fan could not help but shake his head and murmur to himself.
Zhao Ying frowned slightly. She clearly had not expected Yan Dong to die such a miserable death. Unfortunately, she did not know about the inhuman things Yan Dong had done; otherwise, she would never have felt that his death was tragic.
