Zhao Ying’s position in the police station was earned through her own hard work and ability, step by step. Everyone in the bureau witnessed it. She never mentioned her father, nor did she ever use her family connections. Yet today, for the sake of Lin Fan, she spoke those words, leaving everyone brought by Yan Dong utterly astonished. They wondered whether it was worth offending Zhao Ying just to catch Lin Fan.

Zhao Ying’s father was the Party Secretary of T City, a municipality directly under the central government—equivalent in power to a provincial governor. Having someone dismissed, or even quietly made to disappear, was as easy as snapping one’s fingers. For a moment, Yan Dong stood frozen, unable to believe Zhao Ying would protect Lin Fan so fiercely.

Seeing her words had stunned Yan Dong, Zhao Ying didn’t waste any time. “Come, let’s go,” she said, pulling Lin Fan toward the car without waiting for his consent.

Lin Fan could only smile bitterly to himself. “What exactly is this girl planning?”

“Zhao Ying, where are you taking him?” Yan Dong finally reacted as he saw Lin Fan about to leave, shouting in anger. “Everyone, look! Officer Zhao is now abusing her power for personal gain,” he added, his tone dripping with sarcasm.

Zhao Ying seemed to have expected Yan Dong's accusation. She kept her head down, dragging Lin Fan forward. No matter what, she had to get him out of there—she couldn’t let Yan Dong take him back to the station. Zhao Ying told herself this, knowing full well what would happen to Lin Fan if he was caught…

Lin Fan frowned, a cold glint flashing in his eyes, and stopped walking. Suddenly, Zhao Ying realized she couldn’t move him any further. Truthfully, if Lin Fan hadn’t allowed her to pull him along, she could never have dragged him so far.

“So, Officer Zhao is personally escorting me back to the station—do you have an issue with that?” Lin Fan turned, casting a contemptuous glance at Yan Dong.

Yan Dong was thrown off by Lin Fan's words. He’d thought Zhao Ying was using this opportunity to let Lin Fan escape, but with Lin Fan suddenly saying this, Yan Dong was at a loss.

“Someone’s dead! Someone’s dead!” Chaotic shouts erupted behind them. Those petty gang members, who were brave enough to fight, brawl, or slash someone on ordinary days, immediately lost their nerve when faced with a real death—especially with the police present.

Hearing this, Yan Dong couldn’t be happier. He deliberately hadn’t called for an ambulance, hoping Cai Liren would die. And now, fate had granted his wish. But Zhao Ying was panicked—truly panicked. Her hand, clutching Lin Fan’s, was drenched in sweat, trembling slightly and squeezing tighter and tighter, as if Lin Fan might vanish in the next moment.

Last time, when Lin Fan killed someone, only she had seen it. But this time, it was in front of Yan Dong—the situation was entirely different. The phrase “capital crime” flashed through Zhao Ying’s mind…

Lin Fan felt Zhao Ying’s change. He turned, a faint confidence on his lips, and gave her a reassuring look. But Zhao Ying seemed not to notice, still gripping his hand tightly.

Lin Fan knew perfectly well why Cai Liren died. Although he’d taken an arm, with timely treatment it shouldn’t have been fatal. Clearly, Cai Liren had died from excessive blood loss. So, the murder charge couldn’t really be pinned on Lin Fan. Not that it mattered—he’d lost count of how many people he’d killed, and didn’t mind if this one was added to the tally.

“Officer Zhao, please take this murderer back. I trust you’ll uphold the law impartially,” Yan Dong said, no longer worried about Lin Fan escaping. Murder was far more serious than causing grievous bodily harm—a murderer would be wanted nationwide. In Yan Dong’s view, Lin Fan wouldn’t get far now that he’d killed someone.

“Don’t worry, I’ll be waiting for you at the station,” Lin Fan said, shooting Yan Dong a mocking smile.

Lin Fan could see through Yan Dong’s intentions. He didn’t even look at him, and instead pulled the still dazed Zhao Ying into the car.

After Lin Fan left, Yan Dong slowly pulled out his phone and dialed a number…

In the car, Lin Fan called his sister, telling her that he wouldn’t be home tonight due to some matters. Lin Yan didn’t ask much, only reminded him to take care and not let Tang Rui down, before hanging up.

“What a mess,” Lin Fan muttered to himself. He glanced at Zhao Ying, relieved to see she hadn’t heard Lin Yan’s words.

Noticing Lin Fan was heading toward the police station, Zhao Ying turned anxiously. “No, we can’t go back there. Absolutely not.”

“It’s fine, Ying’er, don’t worry,” Lin Fan said with a gentle smile, making a sharp turn.

Zhao Ying was taken aback by Lin Fan’s calm expression, then asked, “You’ve killed someone—why aren’t you worried at all? Are you really not afraid of being executed?”

“I’m more afraid of being worked to death by you,” Lin Fan chuckled, and, taking advantage of Zhao Ying’s distraction, began to tease her.

Zhao Ying hadn’t expected Lin Fan to have the energy to play rogue at a time like this. She pinched him, saying, “Laugh all you want—but how can you be so calm now? What are you really thinking?”

Lin Fan feigned a cheeky cry, making Zhao Ying laugh despite herself. Seeing her relax, Lin Fan said, “Actually, Yan Dong showing up there wasn’t random. Since they arrested me, they must have other plans. I want to see who’s pulling the strings behind all this.” A flash of murderous intent passed through Lin Fan’s eyes.

“Don’t worry, at worst I’ll be charged with causing injury, not murder,” he continued, mainly to reassure Zhao Ying. Truthfully, he didn’t care about charges—he only wanted to know who was plotting against him.

At first, he suspected Jin Million, but it didn’t make sense. Jin Million had already sent the Green Gang after him; why would he foolishly involve the police as well?

Zhao Ying realized Lin Fan had a point. Cai Liren’s death was really due to Yan Dong deliberately delaying medical attention; Lin Fan couldn’t be blamed for everything.

She wanted to say more, but seeing the quiet confidence on Lin Fan’s lips, she couldn’t fathom what he relied on to be so fearless. “Don’t worry, I’ll make sure my dad gets you out of the station,” Zhao Ying said, determination in her voice.

As they spoke, they arrived at the entrance to the police station. Yan Dong hadn’t returned yet—that was the difference between a police car and a Lamborghini, especially with Lin Fan driving.

Zhao Ying entered the station arm in arm with Lin Fan. She was a well-known officer there, and with her father’s status, no one dared make trouble for Lin Fan in her presence.

After the previous incident, most officers didn’t dare to hassle Lin Fan, especially with Zhao Ying by his side. But a few, led by Yan Dong, eagerly opened the interrogation room. Yan Dong had called ahead: if Lin Fan didn’t arrive within a certain time, they were to report up the chain. An escaped murderer was something Yan Dong would welcome—it would save him a lot of trouble.

“Stay here for a while. Someone will take you to the detention center later. I have to go,” Zhao Ying told Lin Fan, then hurried away.

Lin Fan knew Zhao Ying was rushing home to seek her father’s help. After spending so much time with her, he knew she wasn’t someone who relied on her family—but this time, she seemed willing to do anything for him.

Thinking about it, Lin Fan couldn’t help but feel guilty. There was another woman hidden in his heart—a woman he could never forget, no matter what he tried.

Everyone in Dragon Soul knew Lin Fan’s greatest strength was his loyalty to relationships. That was why so many brothers were willing to follow him through life and death. But his biggest flaw was the same: his deep feelings made him prone to losing his way when faced with matters of the heart.

Leaving the interrogation room, Zhao Ying hurriedly drove home. To her, the sooner her father intervened, the greater the chance Lin Fan would be safe.

“Ying’er, why are you back so late today?” As Zhao Ying entered, her father, Zhao Fanglin, smiled at her from the sofa, sipping tea and reading the newspaper.
