Chapter Ninety: Kushina's Counterattack (Second Update)
A deserted forest outside the Hidden Leaf Village.
In order to give his disciple more experience in facing strong opponents, Jiraiya had been personally sparring with him for several days. At this moment, Minato Namikaze was using the dense foliage to conceal himself; Jiraiya was doing the same. This time, instead of instructing his disciple in ninjutsu, he was cultivating Minato’s awareness in dangerous combat situations, and he wasn’t holding back.
That said, Jiraiya didn’t unleash his full abilities—otherwise, he would have simply used the Summoning Technique. If Gamabunta were summoned, Minato would have no way to counter him.
The silent woods, aside from the sound of wind rustling through leaves, seemed utterly devoid of life.
Bang!
Suddenly, a cloud of smoke appeared in the forest—someone had used a smoke bomb.
Hidden behind thick leaves, Jiraiya detected the smoke bomb but remained unmoved; did Minato really think this would draw him out? Looks like today the master must teach his disciple what it truly means to be a ninja...
Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh.
Just as Jiraiya was considering this, he heard several whistling sounds. Without even looking up, he knew shuriken were flying toward him. He hadn’t expected Minato to find his position so quickly.
Jiraiya immediately leapt from the thicket, landing atop another tree branch. Yet before he could confirm Minato’s location, several kunai came flying at him, followed by Minato’s Wind Style ninjutsu.
Wave after wave of attacks—this was Minato’s style. He quickly memorized his opponent’s reactions, then maneuvered like a puppeteer, luring his adversary step by step into a trap.
Jiraiya landed on the ground, dodged the kunai, and was forced to face the incoming Wind Style technique.
“Earth Style: Earth Wall!”
A wall of earth rose before Jiraiya, blocking the sharp wind blades. But the next second, he noticed several kunai sticking to the earth wall, accompanied by the faint sound of ignition.
“Explosive tags!”
Confirming this, Jiraiya couldn’t help but feel gratified by his disciple’s tactics. The relentless attacks would weary any ordinary jonin, and even mentally, a flaw might appear.
A lapse in mental focus during battle could mean death.
Though pleased with Minato’s abilities, Jiraiya had resolved not to go easy on his student. His hands formed seals rapidly, and before the explosion, he unleashed two ninjutsu techniques.
Boom!
The explosion of the tags sent up a shower of flames and dust, but Jiraiya took the opportunity to leap out of the smoke. As he soared through the air, several kunai flew toward him—and among them, a special Flying Thunder God kunai.
The fire and smoke from the explosive tags also obstructed vision. In midair, most ninja would struggle to deal with such tricky kunai throws.
But Jiraiya used ninjutsu to harden his hair like metal, wrapping himself completely, ready to withstand the kunai. However, in the next instant, Minato suddenly appeared beside Jiraiya, swiftly aiming a kunai at his exposed weak spot. Yet from the lingering smoke below, a mass of white hair surged upward.
Sensing the attack, Minato twisted in midair, attempting to cut the hair with his kunai. But it was futile—the chakra-infused hair was equally tough. Within two seconds, Minato was bound tightly by Jiraiya’s hair.
After the battle ended.
Jiraiya advised Minato, “Minato, the Flying Thunder God Technique is indeed convenient, but to truly integrate it into your combat style, you must continually refine it. Your greatest weakness right now is the lack of a decisive finishing move, so you need to keep distracting me and create openings for yourself.”
“If you mastered a strong offensive ninjutsu, you could use Flying Thunder God to probe—if the strike fails, just retreat immediately... Right, you might consider learning from Elder Sakumo’s sword techniques. His Hatake Style incorporates Wind Chakra nature transformation, and its power can easily cut through metal. Even my Needle Jizo can’t defend against it.”
“Wind-natured sword techniques...” Minato nodded thoughtfully. That would certainly increase his close-range lethality, but he knew little about swordsmanship, or rather, was completely unfamiliar.
Besides, swordsmanship’s growth is difficult; mastering it would not be a simple task. Minato was intelligent and acutely aware of his own shortcomings. Wind Chakra sword techniques could indeed boost his strength—but only by a bit.
“I understand, Jiraiya-sensei. I’ll go home and think it over carefully.”
Minato bowed in thanks to Jiraiya. It was thanks to his teacher’s guidance that he had improved so much recently.
Jiraiya knew that Lord Sarutobi had high hopes for Minato, and had repeatedly told him to instruct Minato well, so even team missions were rarely assigned.
“It’s nothing. You are my student. A teacher’s purpose is to guide his disciples,” Jiraiya laughed heartily. Then, his expression changed to a mischievous grin. He nudged Minato with his elbow, “Forget training for now, Minato—how’s your pursuit of Kushina going lately?”
At the mention of this, Minato’s face fell. Unhappy, he took a book from his ninja pouch and handed it to Jiraiya.
“Jiraiya-sensei, I’m returning this book. None of the methods in it worked at all.”
He didn’t mind giving it back, since he’d already read it twice.
“They didn’t work? That shouldn’t be—the book is so well-written...” Jiraiya frowned slightly, then produced another book, brand new. “Minato, look at this one. It’s completely different from the last. Honestly, I think it’s even better. After reading it, I felt inspiration surge—it might be time I wrote my own.”
“Then congratulations in advance, Jiraiya-sensei...” Minato glanced at the cover of the new book, intending to refuse, but found himself reaching for it regardless.
...
After returning from Ryūchi Cave, Karn and Orochimaru discussed their next steps. Karn had over two kilograms of dragon blood and meat. With so many dragon types, and dragons not being rare in the Harry Potter world, Karn’s stockpile was substantial.
This would last Orochimaru about two years, and with his previous success, only minor adjustments were needed.
As for training Sage Mode, Karn planned to return to Ryūchi Cave after leaving the Hidden Leaf. Perfect Sage Mode could multiply the power of his ninjutsu, and boost his stamina, sensory ability, and recovery in all aspects.
Most importantly, the Ryūchi Cave Dragon Sage Arts allow control over inorganic matter—a truly formidable technique.
Such benefits were irresistible to Karn.
Still, he would have to wait a few more days, as Karn wanted a flying fire dragon mount. It would be a wholly different experience from a flying broomstick, with a unique aura. He even considered building a magical carriage drawn by the fire dragon.
Such a thing would be unimaginable in the Harry Potter world, given the ferocious temperament of fire dragons—no dragon tamer could ever truly calm them. But the fire dragons bred by Orochimaru were extraordinarily obedient; as long as they were influenced by chakra, they behaved like Ryūchi Cave’s summoning beasts.
However, the specially cultivated fire dragon embryos still needed time, so Karn decided to stay in the Leaf Village for a while longer.
During this period, Karn could study Orochimaru’s Cursed Seal Jutsu.
Once he mastered it, Karn could return to the Marvel world and cultivate a horde of loyal subordinates. Those marked with the Curse Seal would continuously be influenced by Karn’s chakra, becoming supremely loyal.
Karn was also waiting for news of medicine production in the Land of Tea. Once manufactured, it would be shipped to the Land of Waves, then transferred to Kawaki Town.
At that point, Karn would take the batch to the Capital of the Land of Fire. With the feudal lords’ habits, the stock would likely sell out in no time.
There were stimulants in the ninja world, but their effects were far inferior to Viagra.
Moreover, Karn planned to establish a newspaper for publicity in the ninja world, so he had to visit the Capital to consult the owner of Lichun Bookstore, hoping for staffing support.
Public opinion was a powerful weapon for ninja. Hatake Sakumo was so formidable that even five years after his death, he worried the Iwagakure jonin. If Karn could control public opinion channels, dealing with certain people would become much simpler.
For instance, spreading rumors about Danzo—once they swept across the Land of Fire, Danzo would be finished. Not only would he never become Hokage, he wouldn’t even remain a ninja; everyone would oppose him, and if he stayed, the Leaf would be ruined.
That is the power of public opinion—especially since the ninja world is not yet very enlightened. With a single guide, ninety percent of people would believe.
While studying Cursed Seal Jutsu at home, Kushina would often visit Karn after finishing her day’s tasks, coming to the back of the dessert shop.
Though she had the excuse of buying sweets, neither Nanami nor the other staff would expose Kushina. After all, very few people bought just a small box of sweets, and she came every day.
Karn welcomed Kushina’s visits. She not only taught him sealing jutsu, but also had some knowledge of Cursed Seal Jutsu.
According to Kushina, whether it’s barrier techniques or Cursed Seal Jutsu, both evolved from sealing jutsu, and when it comes to sealing, no one surpasses her.
Karn found this boastful; ten years from now, perhaps she’d be qualified to say so—by then, she could restrain the complete Nine Tails with just a breath. But now, Kushina was a bit lacking; she hadn’t yet learned the last few advanced sealing techniques of the Uzumaki clan.
One night, after Karn had nearly mastered Cursed Seal Jutsu with Kushina’s guidance, he gratefully patted her beautiful red hair. “Thank you, Kushina. Without you, it would have taken me much longer to learn.”
After all, he had only just begun sealing jutsu before tackling Cursed Seal Jutsu—it was indeed challenging.
“It’s nothing, just a small favor.” Kushina smiled, then seemed to remember something, bringing her hand to her mouth and feigning a cough. She murmured, “My neck and shoulders have been feeling sore; looks like I won’t sleep well again tonight...”
“That could be troublesome. Best to take a bath before bed...” Karn replied casually, then suddenly realized something. Seeing Kushina’s evasive gaze, he thought to himself—was this a hint?
So Karn tentatively asked, “Would you like me to give you a massage?”
