Chapter 5: The Great Demon King
Gah~ Gah~~
Unfortunately, before Chen Mo could even begin to celebrate, the nightmarish cries of the gorillas arrived right on cue. These five gorillas paid no heed to the wall of fire; their bodies were as tough as steel. The earth spikes snapped instantly against their hides.
Within this dungeon, the gorillas were invincible, immune to any harm.
Poor Chen Mo, who had managed to leap across with great effort, was smacked to death by one of the gorillas in a single blow.
[Challenge failed. Final score: 1,000 meters. Reward: 1,000 points.]
Check attributes!
By now, Chen Mo was well practiced at using the intelligent brain interface.
[Chen Mo]
[Physique: 10 (Strength: 3, Constitution: 2, Agility: 5)]
[Mental: 10 (Spellcraft: 3, Qi Sea: 1, Meditation: 6)]
That’s right! Chen Mo’s physique had increased by five points compared to the beginning!
What Chen Mo didn’t know was that ordinary people had a hidden ability: through diligence and training, they could continuously improve their basic attributes. As long as they worked hard, their stats could keep rising.
Warriors and mages, however, were different. Their stats were fixed by the system; only through purchasing attribute points, equipment, or rare encounters could they gain system-boosted stats.
Of course, it was extremely difficult for ordinary people to improve their base attributes.
Except for freaks like Chen Mo, everyone else had only three attempts at the challenge. To increase basic stats in just three runs was pure fantasy. Even if they trained relentlessly in the real world, it would take at least half a year to gain a single attribute point.
Chen Mo had attempted the challenge ten thousand times. Through repeated failure, he had become numb to death. His willpower and mental fortitude soared, and his reaction and movement speed underwent a qualitative leap.
“Haha! Damn gorilla! I’m not afraid of you! Let’s go again!”
Chen Mo was now brimming with confidence. Inside the Evolution Sphere, time was nearly stopped; even a year or ten years of training here would pass in the blink of an eye outside. Given enough time, Chen Mo firmly believed his stats would explode, and then that so-called warrior apprentice would be no match for him!
Just as Chen Mo prepared for his ten thousand and first challenge, the gorillas suddenly fell silent, and the temple vanished!
The elf girl’s eyes finally returned to normal—presumably, the bug had been fixed.
Sure enough, the elf girl spoke sweetly: “Third challenge failed. All daily attempts used up. Final score: 1,000 meters. Would you like to save your record? Next time, you can resume from the 1,000-meter mark.”
Save the record?
Starting from 1,000 meters, there would be all sorts of fire, ice walls, spikes, and raging winds ahead. If Chen Mo began from there, how could he train, improve stats, or farm points?
“No save!” Chen Mo refused decisively.
Uh!
The elf girl froze for a second! Clearly, the challenge was meant to be cleared, and normal people would always choose to save and continue next time. But Chen Mo refused!
The elf girl was originally programmed with fixed routines, but after being affected by several of Chen Mo’s bugs, special factors had begun to slowly change her evolution. Of course, only Chen Mo’s elf girl had evolved; everyone else’s remained as before.
The elf girl resumed: “Record saved! Challenge data cleared! As this is your first time participating in the dungeon challenge, please name your character!”
Character naming?
Is this really just an online game?
Without hesitation, Chen Mo blurted out, “Great Demon King!”
Because Chen Mo’s name contained the character ‘Mo,’ the title Great Demon King was perfectly fitting!
“Sorry, that name is already taken. Please choose another.”
Taken? Ha!
Chen Mo insisted, “Sorry! I want Great Demon King!”
“Sorry, that name is already taken...”
“Great Demon King!”
“Sorry, that name...”
“Great Demon King!”
...
Ding ding ding!!
Finally, the elf girl’s system crashed again!
If it had been any other player, the system would have long since punished them.
But Chen Mo was not like the others—he was outside the system’s jurisdiction, and the intelligent particle he used had been snatched from someone else.
The elf girl was down for ten minutes before the data finally reset: “Data reset. Great Demon King successfully named! Returning to the dungeon lobby now!”
Name succeeded?!
Hahahahahaha—hic—Chen Mo laughed like a pig. He knew it: rules are made to be broken. If you really treat this place as a game, you’ll become its slave sooner or later. Chen Mo wanted to be master of the game!
A flash of white light, and Chen Mo returned to the original dungeon lobby.
...
Capital City, a certain luxurious estate.
An Evolution Sphere hovered above the estate’s fountain, surrounded by over a hundred bodyguards in black suits.
At this moment, only one player was inside the Evolution Sphere: the estate’s owner, Wang Sicong, twenty-two years old, one of the four young masters of the capital.
Wang Sicong had already learned about the Evolution Sphere’s wonders from above, so he immediately sealed it off and entered alone. He chose the warrior apprentice role, and with extraordinary luck, awakened the basic combat skill—Charge Slash. This gave him terrifying momentum, allowing him to leap five-meter pits with ease, and even ten-meter ones. His first challenge reached 1,000 meters; second, 2,000 meters; third, an astonishing 5,000 meters, placing him in the top thousand of the Temple Run dungeon leaderboard in China, under the name Great Demon King!
However, just as Wang Sicong was basking in his ranking in the dungeon lobby, he suddenly found his name forcibly changed to Second Demon King! Damn it!
“Damn it! Elf girl, come out! Explain yourself! Get out here!” Wang Sicong raged hysterically, but the elf girl only smiled, unmoved.
No matter how powerful Wang Sicong was in real life, here he was just another ordinary player.
“Warning: further insults to the system will result in death penalty!”
Wang Sicong instantly shrank back, silent.
But when he opened the leaderboard and checked the Temple Run dungeon scores, his face twisted, his chest tightened, and he nearly collapsed. At the top of the ranking, three bold characters stood out—Great Demon King!!
Damn!!!
Who stole my name? Who?!
Wang Sicong was a kingmaker in the real world. When had he suffered such humiliation? His own ID had been snatched away.
“No matter who you are, I’ll find you! I’ll make you wish you were dead!”
