Chapter 73: Who Could Possibly Resist This?
Standing before his mother's door, Ye Kun paused, straightened his collar, then caught himself—why was he doing this? Was he trying to look more dashing to meet his wives? Forget it, forget it. Ye Kun wasn't the sort to fuss over such details.
Knock, knock, knock... Ye Kun rapped on the door.
"Who is it?" The voice that answered was full of grievance and resentment, a tone only years of being a wronged wife could cultivate.
"It's me," Ye Kun replied, wondering if Yan Muer had lost her mind entirely...
There was a brief silence inside.
"Husband~" The voice transformed, syrupy sweet in an instant, leaving Ye Kun bewildered by the change.
"Husband, come in quickly~" Ye Li chimed in with a coquettish lilt, sweet enough to make one swoon.
Ye Kun sighed softly. Both women seemed to say one thing but mean another, though he had no proof.
He pushed open the door. Beside his mother's bed were two small beds, each occupied by one of his wives, curled up under their quilts, only their heads peeking out, gazing at him with pitiful eyes.
Who could withstand such looks? Thankfully, Brother Kun could.
"Why do you have upset stomachs? Did you catch a chill last night?" Ye Kun walked to stand between the two beds, curiosity in his voice as he looked at his woeful wives.
Yan Muer and Ye Li stared at the bald head before them, itching to give him a good thrashing. If it weren't for him, would they be in this sorry state?
In all their lives, they'd never suffered such a loss.
"We caught a cold making soup for you last night, husband," Yan Muer replied, her eyes brimming with tears.
Now Ye Kun truly understood what "dewy, soulful eyes" meant—those tears were ready to spill.
Any other man would have scooped both women into his arms for comfort.
But Brother Kun was different.
"If you're ill, you should take medicine," he said gravely.
Yan Muer and Ye Li were stunned. Had they not seemed pitiable enough? Was their expression off? Such a response?
Yan Muer began to doubt her master's teachings. Hadn't her master said that men adored delicate, fragile women, that if you acted weak, they'd give you everything?
Yet this little bald head had just told her to take medicine!
Was this a matter of medicine? Shouldn't he be embracing her, offering the warmth of a true husband?
No wonder he had no wife! Ye Li suddenly realized she'd misjudged her father all these years. Her father was, in fact, a good man—at least he would do something when her mother was ill. Look at this bald head: beyond saying "you're sick, take medicine," he just stood there like a fool.
What else could he do? It was infuriating... This was all his fault!
Fuming, she still put on the act of a gentle, understanding wife.
"Husband, medicine won't help. I need a hug," Ye Li said, reaching out with both arms, begging for comfort after a night of misery.
Ye Kun replied seriously, "My lady, if medicine doesn't work, I doubt a hug will be effective either."
Ye Li was speechless.
Yan Muer couldn't help but chuckle. She hadn't wanted to laugh, but she simply couldn't hold it in—this little bald head was the very image of a proper gentleman.
But as she laughed, her stomach began to churn again, and she wanted to cry.
Mocking Brother Kun? She could wait for divine retribution.
"Big Sister, our husband simply believes that since we're not yet married, men and women should keep their distance," Yan Muer said, clutching her stomach, forcing a justification—she couldn't let her husband get a bad impression of her.
Ye Kun found sense in her words. "Muer is right; it's better to keep some distance."
Ye Li fumed. This woman! Where did she get the confidence to call her "big sister"? She must be tens of thousands of years old! Claiming to be fifteen—did she have no shame?
And this bald head—would it kill him to offer a hug? Was she so unattractive? Was something wrong with her?
"My dear sister speaks true; it was I who was too forward. I just like our husband so much I couldn't help myself," Ye Li said, almost choking on her words. To think she actually responded to being called "big sister"! And shamelessly tried to curry favor with their husband—she was the most brazen old woman she'd ever seen.
Ye Kun felt overwhelmed by their words—so forward...
When a girl takes the initiative, there's simply no place for a man.
"Husband, big sister has said everything I wanted to," Yan Muer pouted adorably.
Ye Li nearly gagged—never had she seen such shamelessness.
Ye Kun had had enough. "Well… If there's nothing else, you should get up soon. I'll be going now."
With that, Ye Kun turned on his heel and left, leaving the two "girls" dumbfounded.
Had it been any other man, he would have been torn apart by now.
What was going on in his head?
After Ye Kun left, Ye Li and Yan Muer exchanged a glance. When two women look at each other like that, chances are high a catfight is imminent.
In their hearts, both wanted to seize the other's hair and give her a good kick for putting on such airs.
"Old woman," Ye Li launched the first attack, her words laced with venom.
Yan Muer's gaze turned cold. "Still claiming to be sixteen? Don't you know your own age? Shameless woman."
"Even if I'm shameless, I'm not as shameless as you, always forcing yourself in where you're not wanted."
"At least my union with our husband is proper and arranged—do you have that?" Yan Muer retorted smugly, her beautiful blue eyes flashing.
Ye Li sneered, "Our husband doesn't even want you. Wasn't it obvious yesterday? You only stayed because you played the pity card. What exactly are your intentions?"
"Intentions? What are your intentions? Trying to sabotage my relationship with our husband, aren't you?"
"You fox spirit."
"You old crone!"
Ye Li's face darkened. "Call me old woman one more time!"
"Blah, blah, blah, I just did. What are you going to do, bite me?"
Ye Li lunged, but a sharp pain in her stomach made her crash headlong into Yan Muer's arms. The impact nearly made Yan Muer lose control, so she gripped Ye Li's head tightly, struggling to hold it in.
At the same time, Ye Li clung fiercely to Yan Muer's waist, feeling on the verge of disaster herself.
Just then, Ye Kun opened the door again, intending to discuss the wedding arrangements.
But the scene before him left him bewildered. Were these two girls really so close? The moment he left, they were already embracing each other so affectionately?
He had thought they would be jealous of each other. Clearly, he had been overthinking it.
"Sorry to disturb you," Ye Kun hastily retreated, closing the door behind him. It was too much.
Inside, the two young women did not let go. Only by holding each other tightly could they hold out.
Now this was truly love and rivalry entwined...
