The next day, in a small chamber adjacent to the sewer laboratory.
A heap of mangled, bloody limbs lay scattered on the floor. In one corner of the chamber, bound to a tall iron rack, was a pale-skinned, emaciated white man.
A dozen or so werewolf scientists were sorting through the gruesome pile, hoping to salvage something useful.
"Oh... damn it, those beasts! They keep bringing back useless scraps. What we need are living specimens, not a bunch of rotten flesh. Good heavens! No, I must report this bad news to the doctor and have him warn those beasts!"
After a while, a young Black man rose from the floor, dropping a lump of decayed flesh with a scowl as he stormed out of the chamber.
“Mike, go and fetch more vampire blood!”
At that moment, Dr. Jackson was intently peering into a microscope, occasionally looking up to jot down data on cellular molecular structures. Seeing the young Black man emerge from the chamber, he immediately gave the order.
“Doctor, we’re running low on materials. Only one living test subject remains,” the Black assistant said with concern as he entered the chamber and drew a vial of blood from the bound white man, handing it to Dr. Jackson.
“Oh... damn it. Can't those beasts be gentler? Every time I ask them to capture live specimens, they return with a pile of dismembered limbs. Looks like I need to have a serious talk with Lucien.”
Taking the vampire blood from the assistant, Dr. Jackson ran his fingers through his disheveled hair and called out to a nearby white scientist, “Faes, go fetch Lucien. I must speak with him.”
...
“Dr. Jackson, I heard you wanted to see me. Is there something wrong?”
Fifteen minutes later, Lucien pushed open the laboratory door and stepped inside, eyeing Dr. Jackson who was still focused on the microscope.
“Lucien, I need living vampires—live specimens—not a pile of useless corpses. I’m sure you understand what I mean.”
“Over the past three months, you’ve only provided me with two living test subjects, putting my research at a disadvantage. I hope you can rein in your beasts and make them more careful. Also, take that useless pile of flesh away. Don’t let it contaminate my lab.”
Seeing Lucien, Dr. Jackson looked up, his face flushed with anger as he pointed at the pile of dismembered bodies and shouted.
“Dr. Jackson, you know the Dark Walkers don’t go easy. Hunting them costs us dearly. Capturing them alive is nearly impossible.”
Lucien’s eyes flashed with displeasure as he stared at the white-haired old man. As the King of Werewolves, being scolded by a newly turned werewolf soured his mood immensely. If not for the fact that this elder was the laboratory director appointed by the God of Bloodline Sorcery himself, Lucien would have leapt forward to tear him apart and teach him the consequences of offending the King of Werewolves.
“Excuses, all of them. Can’t you hunt ordinary vampires instead? I only need living vampires. My experiment is at a critical stage. If it’s interrupted due to a lack of living specimens, I think you understand the consequences. The great God of Bloodline Sorcery demands results. I don’t want you to embarrass yourself before the divine throne.”
The old white man met Lucien’s fiery gaze without flinching. The atmosphere in the laboratory froze instantly.
The ordinary scientists all watched Lucien anxiously, silently praying he would be gentle.
“Very well. I understand. However, the recent actions of our Litcan tribe have alerted the vampires. They’ve retreated to their lairs. It may take a few days before we can bring live specimens,” Lucien said, forcing down his anger and choosing compromise. After all, this concerned the grand design of the great God of Bloodline Sorcery, and he did not wish to provoke divine wrath.
But in his heart, he vowed that if the chance arose, he would make this old man suffer to show him that the King of Werewolves was not to be trifled with.
...
“How is the experiment progressing, Dr. Jackson?”
No sooner had Lucien left than Li Yang appeared out of thin air in the laboratory.
Now that his magic power had fully recovered and his combat strength was nearly restored, he no longer needed to hide cautiously as before. Some plans were ready to be put into motion.
“Your Majesty, your theory was correct. The genes of vampires and werewolves do share similarities. Their gene segments in the first half are almost identical, both possessing extremely potent infectious capabilities. But the latter halves diverge entirely.”
“This suggests their origins might indeed stem from the same ancestral bloodline, just as Your Majesty speculated.”
Dr. Jackson was long accustomed to Li Yang’s sudden appearances; such scenes had become routine.
“Is that so? Have you found a way to isolate the original gene?”
Upon hearing this, Li Yang’s face lit up with anticipation.
Since encountering Lucien, Li Yang had conceived a plan: to discover the origins of vampires and werewolves and, using the characteristics of the undead blood as a template, create a new cultivation system—the Bloodline Sorcerer.
The undead blood, infected with wolf virus, could transform one into a werewolf. If Li Yang could infect the undead blood with genes from ancient mythical beasts like the Three-Legged Golden Toad or the Six-Winged Golden Centipede, perhaps he could create a novel cultivation system akin to the Bloodline Sorcerers of his previous life, who cultivated by harnessing the bloodlines of ancient creatures.
It was a bold experiment, and Li Yang was unsure if it would succeed. If it did, he could even use dragon essence to create a cadre of Dragon Sorcerers or directly graft the purest undead bloodline with dragon essence to birth a new dragon breed.
But Alexander Kovenas’s era was long past. His last pure-blooded descendant had vanished into the vast sea of humanity, making discovery akin to finding a needle in a haystack. As for Alexander Kovenas’s own bloodline, it was something Li Yang was determined to obtain.
According to the original story, if his descendants were recessive bloodlines, then Alexander Kovenas himself was the purest dominant bloodline. Coupled with nearly two thousand years of energy accumulated in his cells, he was undoubtedly the best vessel for dragon essence.
At first, Li Yang’s magic was sealed, and his combat strength greatly diminished. The werewolves’ foundation was weak. If he searched openly, Alexander Kovenas might sense it and hide, making it impossible to find him again.
Li Yang had devised a counter-strategy: to subdue the vampire clan. Compared to the weaker werewolves, the vampires had deep roots on this land spanning over a thousand years. With their help, everything would proceed much more smoothly.
“Your Majesty, that’s nearly impossible. Their bloodlines have been contaminated by their respective genes, forming an inseparable whole. Forcibly separating them would only yield a mass of collapsed cells.”
“Is that so?”
Li Yang was not disappointed by Dr. Jackson’s answer; it was close to what he had imagined.
This was likely a trait of the undead bloodline—once fused with other genetic cells, it transforms into an entirely new gene. This evolution is irreversible; once the cells form, the original cells are infected by the new ones. This explained the infectious nature of the werewolf and vampire lineages.
The first werewolf infected a human in mere minutes. Lucien’s mother was infected by the first werewolf but weakened through the maternal body, greatly diminishing the infectivity of the werewolf gene.
Hence, Lucien retained human intelligence and werewolves gained the ability to revert to human form. If William was the progenitor of the first werewolf and the origin of all werewolf bloodlines, then Lucien was the origin of modern werewolves.
“How is the cell formula I asked you to calculate? According to my hypothesis, if we find that primitive bloodline, can it be fused with the genes I gave you?”
After pondering for a moment, Li Yang asked again.
He had already separated some cells of the Six-Winged Golden Centipede from his own body, and collected genes of the Three-Legged Golden Toad and the Angry Clear Chicken, handing them to Dr. Jackson to simulate whether the primordial undead blood could accommodate these ancient beast cells.
“Great God of Bloodline Sorcery, Your Majesty, the three genes you provided each transcend current biological limits. They contain energies and radiations never before seen. Whether the primordial cells can withstand such overwhelming energy remains uncertain.”
“Any energy must originate from somewhere. The reason vampires and werewolves can infect humans is that their internal energy is only marginally higher than that of ordinary humans. But the cells you’ve provided are entirely different. Generating such cellular structures out of thin air is nearly impossible. Even if they can be forcibly combined, they would lose their infectious abilities.”
Dr. Jackson handed Li Yang his research data and the formula he had derived.
“Infection ability is secondary. As long as the primordial gene can integrate with the genes I gave you, it’s a major breakthrough. Doctor, proceed with calculations along this line and refine the formula. Our time is short.”
Li Yang did not take the documents. To be honest, he couldn’t understand them. At most, he could provide foresight and ideas; the rest was up to them.
