Holding the canister of black liquid, she accompanied her parents to the rooftop. Following the instructions on the note, Xu Si drew a circle on the ground and stood within it with her parents.
Moonlight bathed the rooftop in a deathly silence. Suddenly, Pudding, the black cat, broke free from Xu Si’s arms, darted outside the circle, and let out a shrill, piercing cry toward the sky. Immediately, the air seemed to congeal, and Xu Si felt a powerful, crushing force bearing down upon them.
"Quick, hold on to me!" her father shouted. The three of them clung tightly to one another, the sound of Xu Si’s own heartbeat echoing in her ears. Just then, a dark shadow lunged from the gloom, rushing straight toward them. Xu Si closed her eyes in terror, bracing for an unknown fate.
However, the anticipated pain never came. Slowly opening her eyes, Xu Si saw that the moment the shadow touched the perimeter of the circle, it was repelled by a mysterious force. With a wretched howl of agony, the shadow faded back into the darkness.
As the shadow vanished, the oppressive weight lifted. Xu Si and her parents let out long, relieved breaths; they had succeeded.
Back home, Xu Si discovered that all the strange rule-laden notes had disappeared. From that day on, they encountered no further oddities, and their lives returned to peace.
Xu Si knew that the experience of that night would be etched into her memory forever. As for that house, it became a part of their past they never wished to speak of again.
But the tranquility did not last long. One day, while sorting through old belongings, Xu Si unearthed a long-forgotten diary. Its pages were yellowed and emitted an ancient, musty scent. Curiously, she opened it and discovered that the author was a former resident of the house.
The contents of the diary left Xu Si stunned. It turned out that years ago, a bizarre murder had taken place there. The owner of the house had been a scientist obsessed with the occult, conducting forbidden experiments in his home in an attempt to open a gateway between the living and the dead. During one such experiment, he accidentally unleashed an evil shadow entity that brutally murdered him and his family. Since then, the house had been cursed, and strange occurrences had plagued it ever since.
Xu Si realized that although they had temporarily evaded the shadow’s threat, the issue was not truly resolved. The shadow entity might have only been repelled, waiting for a chance to return. She was torn, unsure whether to tell her parents, fearing it would cause unnecessary panic. Ultimately, Xu Si decided to seek a permanent solution on her own.
She began frequenting the library, devouring every resource on the occult and supernatural. In an ancient tome, she found records of similar shadow entities. The book stated that these beings fed on negative emotions and fear; to destroy one permanently, one had to find its core vessel and purify it. According to the clues in the diary, that vessel was likely still hidden within the house.
Taking a deep breath, Xu Si decided to return to the house that filled her with such dread. That night, hiding her departure from her parents, she slipped inside. Moonlight filtered through the windows, casting the interior in an eerie light. She searched every room with meticulous care, leaving no corner unexamined.
When she reached the basement, a chill washed over her. The cellar was piled high with debris, reeking of damp and decay. Xu Si forced herself to overcome her fear, groping her way through the darkness. Suddenly, she heard a low, guttural growl—the sound of the shadow entity. Her heart leaped into her throat as she frantically searched for the source of the noise.
In the far corner of the basement, she discovered a hidden compartment behind the wall. A strange, eerie glow emanated from within. Xu Si approached and saw a crystal ball radiating black energy; this was surely the shadow’s core vessel. Just as she reached out to take it, the shadow entity suddenly materialized, lunging toward her with claws outstretched.
Xu Si scrambled back, and in her panic, she recalled the purification method mentioned in the book: it required one’s own courage and unwavering will as a guide. She inhaled deeply, suppressed her terror, and concentrated, pouring all her conviction into her hands. Light bloomed from her palms, gradually enveloping the crystal ball. The shadow entity shrieked in agony, struggling desperately to escape.
Xu Si gritted her teeth, refusing to let go. As the light intensified, the shadow’s power waned. Every frantic, twisting motion of the creature felt like its final death throes. Her arms ached from the prolonged exertion, and sweat dripped down her forehead, blurring her vision. Yet, she held onto one singular belief: to destroy this demon and restore true peace to her life.
Finally, with a thunderous sound, the shadow entity dissipated entirely, and the crystal ball turned pure, dissolving into a beam of light that vanished into nothingness.
Xu Si slumped onto the floor, tears streaming down her face. She knew the nightmare was finally over. When she returned home, she looked at her sleeping parents, her heart filled with warmth. She resolved to bury these events deep within her, protecting their current happiness and letting the terrifying past fade away forever.
After that night, Xu Si’s life seemed to have truly returned to the right track.
She laughed with her friends, enjoying the beauty of her youth to the fullest, and her grades steadily improved, earning her a proud ranking in her most recent exam. At home, her parents’ faces regained their former ease and joy; their family meals were filled with warmth.
As peaceful days flowed by, Xu Si thought the shadow’s gloom had been completely dispelled. However, on a night when a gale was howling and the tree branches outside whipped against the windows with bone-chilling sounds, Xu Si was startled awake by faint, indistinct whispers. The voices seemed to come from far away, yet also sounded as if they were right beside her ear. She was instantly wide awake, her blood running cold. She pricked up her ears to listen carefully, but the sound vanished.
A sense of foreboding welled up in Xu Si. She stepped out of her room, treading softly, only to see a familiar yet alien shadow flickering in the mist.
"Whatever you are," she shouted, "don't think you can come back and disrupt my life!" With that, she clenched her hands and summoned that power of purification once again.
The shadow seemed shaken by Xu Si’s resolve, letting out a low growl but failing to approach.
As Xu Si channeled her power, the shadow dissolved into a wisp of smoke and vanished without a trace. The mist in the living room dissipated along with it, and everything returned to silence.
