Chapter 9: Do You Know? All the Girls in Our Village Envy You

Ye Wanxin sneered coldly in her heart! She had never expected Meng Jingchen to marry her! Of course, she never asked for any bride price or gifts; those were all given by him voluntarily. So, Aunt Zhao really had the audacity to speak up! Did she think an ordinary family could afford such things? Moreover, Ye Wan was somewhat disdainful of Dayi. After all, she was too weak. In front of her mother, she didn’t dare to utter a single word. Yes, she had a younger brother, but judging by this, he would probably become a timid shadow in the future! Who would dare to marry such a girl? That would only invite trouble! She wouldn’t dare to do such a thing!
“Auntie, you know my fiancé rarely comes back. The military life is hard, time is tight, and it’s dangerous. I really can’t help with this,” Ye Wanxin said tactfully. She still didn’t want to offend anyone completely. After all, she and her grandfather still lived in this village, and if they pushed people too far, who knows what trouble might arise.
“Uh…” Aunt Zhao was stunned. She hadn’t expected such a direct refusal! How embarrassing! But she had nothing to say because the other party’s reasoning was sound. Still, she felt a bit humiliated. At the same time, she suspected Ye Wanxin was worried that her daughter might marry better than hers and was thus unwilling to make introductions. Hmph! That only made her angrier! She knew her own daughter had a better figure—slimmer and more attractive—so naturally Ye Wanxin must be worried. She had known this for a long time! Looking at Ye Wanxin’s face, her disgust grew. What was there to be so proud of? Hmph! With her appearance, was she really worthy of him? She’d probably be dumped before long!
“Hmph, you’re just afraid that my Dayi will marry better than yours and make you lose face!” Aunt Zhao finally blurted out.
“Auntie, you’re mistaken. But whatever you think is your business. I have nothing more to say,” Ye Wanxin shot a glance and dismissed her words. She was too lazy to argue further. If she insisted on thinking that way, so be it.
Meanwhile, Dayi said nothing, quietly washing the clothes in her hands. No one knew what she really thought.
Ye Wanxin glanced at Dayi.

Dayi really had a calm demeanor. She was a deeply calculating person, definitely not as simple as she appeared. Maybe… but so what? What did it have to do with her?
Aunt Zhao, seeing Ye Wanxin’s anger and hearing her words, realized she really had offended her. Yet, she still wanted Ye Wanxin’s fiancé to introduce a good match for her daughter. So… she had no choice.
“Oh, Ye Wanxin, I spoke wrongly. I’m just worried about Dayi since she’s not young anymore. I got anxious and misspoke. Don’t take it to heart. You’re both girls and close in age—you two talk, I’ll leave first!” Aunt Zhao said, then left directly.
“Dayi, learn well from your sister Ye Wanxin, finish washing these clothes before going home,” Dayi’s mother said before leaving.
“Got it, mother!” Dayi nodded.
Looking at the whole family’s laundry, her heart turned cold. She had to wash all the clothes alone. Clearly, her mother didn’t love her. She was treated like a beast of burden, and now that she was older, her mother wanted to sell her off.
Heh.
She really envied Ye Wanxin—no, every girl in the village envied Ye Wanxin! They envied her for having a kind grandfather who took such good care of her, protected her so well, never letting her do anything hard. And what about them? Each was treated like a beast of burden and sold off for bride price. Truly pitiful!
Thinking this, she scrubbed harder, her fingers turning red and even slightly chafed, but she didn’t care.
Ye Wanxin also felt uneasy seeing Dayi like this. They were all girls! Seeing others suffer so much, she felt helpless.
“Ye Wanxin, you know, all the girls in our village envy you!” Dayi turned, her eyes red as she looked at Ye Wanxin.
Yes! They envied her deeply!
“I know. You all envy me because I have a grandfather who loves and protects me, so I don’t have to do anything hard. Honestly, I envy myself too,” Ye Wanxin said gracefully.
Yes! She envied herself! Otherwise, her situation wouldn’t be much better than theirs.
“So you knew all along!” Dayi said.
“Of course,” Ye Wanxin nodded. She wasn’t stupid. Naturally, she knew.
She continued washing the clothes.

These clothes were hers to wash. Her grandfather originally forbade her, but he couldn’t resist her. Moreover, almost all the clothes were hers, except for one belonging to her grandfather.
“Ye Wanxin, you don’t want your fiancé to introduce someone for me because you look down on me and think I’m not worthy, right?” Dayi spoke again.
“How could you think that? I don’t want to repeat myself. Believe it or not, it’s up to you,” Ye Wanxin’s tone turned cold.
“Heh, actually, I don’t even like myself. I hate who I am but have no way out,” Dayi said again, smiling at Ye Wanxin.
Ye Wanxin was speechless. This person changed moods too fast! It felt a bit pathological!
She decided to keep her distance from Dayi in the future. Something about her seemed off mentally.
“It’s nothing. Don’t worry. I’ve just been oppressed by my mother for too long and suddenly had some feelings,” Dayi said again.
Ye Wanxin glanced at her but said nothing. Instead, she washed faster.
After finishing the last piece of clothing, Ye Wanxin saw many large carp and grass carp by the stone where she squatted. Dayi’s side also had quite a few.
Dayi was still washing clothes, unaware of the fish in the water.
“Dayi, there are fish at your feet—catch them!” Ye Wanxin got excited.
Then she started catching fish. The fish seemed dumb, making them easy to catch.
She casually caught four or five big fish, each weighing three or four pounds. Ye Wanxin strung them on nearby reeds and went back to catching more.
In the end, she caught twelve fish and stopped. That was enough. If she caught more, she couldn’t carry or eat them all.
Dayi caught six or seven fish and was very happy.
“I’ve caught enough. I’m going back. You can keep catching,” Ye Wanxin said, carrying the basin of washed clothes and about ten fish as she left.
The aunts across the way heard this and came over to catch fish too. They started competing, but they arrived late and scared some fish away. Still, each caught two or three fish. Dayi caught nine and then carried her clothes home.
When Dayi’s mother saw the fish, her eyes lit up! She rushed over and hugged all nine big fish.
“Good daughter, where did these fish come from? So many!” Aunt Zhao said, her eyes shining brightly. Meat was rare these days, and fish even more so, especially since they weren’t easy to catch.
“From the river. Many aunts caught fish too, but they caught fewer—usually two or three,” Dayi said, unusually talkative and happy.
“You’re such a good girl. We’re having fish today! Haha, my daughter is amazing!” Aunt Zhao laughed.
