Chapter 18: The Five Assassin Killers

Upon hearing this, Zhao Mang immediately shouted, “Everyone, hide well. When the enemy arrives, shoot first with your bows and arrows. Whether you hit or miss, retreat swiftly into the western woods. And if they pursue, even better!”

The forest was unfavorable terrain for cavalry, effectively weakening their strength. Even if the enemy wasn’t drawn away, it would at least disrupt their charge briefly. Without momentum, the cavalry’s advantage would vanish.

After giving these orders, Zhao Mang settled quietly into his concealed position, watching as the Tibetan raiders slowly approached from afar. This time, five raiders had come. From a distance, one stood out—clad in armor, unlike the others—clearly more formidable, appearing to be a squad leader.

Xiao Han’s voice whispered in his ear: “The one in the center is the squad leader. It seems the Tibetan raider we spared last time still underestimates us.”

Zhao Mang was puzzled. “Squad leader?” He knew little about the military ranks of this era, and this was his first encounter with Tibetan raiders, leaving him ignorant of their hierarchy.

Seeing his confusion, Xiao Han quickly explained, “They operate in squads of five, divided into groups of three. Scouts and rangers typically form these three-person groups. Above the squad is a ‘dingben’ unit with twenty-five men. They’ve only sent a squad this time. So, I don’t think the loss of their scouts last time posed a significant threat.”

Zhao Mang narrowed his eyes, growing more serious. He thought, if that’s the case, he wouldn’t let any of them go this time.

The Tibetan raiders drew closer, passing unnoticed by Zhao Mang and Xiao Han’s hiding spot—a surprising lack of vigilance that shifted Zhao Mang’s perception of them.

At that moment, Zhu Qiqi, lying in ambush at the edge of the western thicket, struck first. An arrow flew directly at the face of the central raider. Unfortunately, perhaps due to the distance, the arrow lacked power, floating lightly and easily dodged.

Several more arrows followed, all ineffective, only serving to enrage the raiders, who spurred their horses forward.

When they had charged about twenty paces, Zhao Mang emerged suddenly, launching a surprise attack from behind. He fired an arrow straight at the squad leader’s back of the head. His archery was masterful; the arrow sliced through the air and reached its mark instantly.

At this moment, the raider’s attention was still focused on Zhu Qiqi and the others ahead. Most wore simple leather helmets and traveled lightly, unable to withstand Zhao Mang’s arrows. The arrow pierced the squad leader’s brain, and he fell heavily from his horse, throwing the charge into disarray.

Among the remaining two riders, one was unseated by a horse accident. The squad’s formation shattered, and their momentum evaporated. The cavalry halted, their leader dead.

Zhu Qiqi and the others quickly nocked and loosed arrows, turning the raiders’ formation into chaos. Zhao Mang did not expect such ease and charged forward. In moments, he reached the side of the raider squad.

The panicked raiders tried to dodge arrows using their horses and noticed Zhao Mang rushing toward them. One daring raider grabbed his large waist blade and charged at Zhao Mang. Others quickly drew their long knives and joined the assault.

Suddenly, it was one against four.

Unfazed, Zhao Mang unleashed his innate strength, swinging his sword with a powerful slash. The blade traced a ghostly arc, slashing diagonally downward. The raider raised his knife to block but was overwhelmed by the immense force before he could react.

Zhao Mang’s sword severed the raider’s blade and body in two. Like a god of death descending, the two halves of the raider’s body flew forward, lifeless instantly.

The remaining raiders behind froze, terrified and astonished at the scene before them, their movements faltering.

Zhao Mang pressed the advantage, swinging his sword again with broad, sweeping strokes. His immense strength, combined with the precious blade gifted by Jiang Wan, cleaved another raider in half effortlessly. Killing them was like slaughtering chickens.

The more Zhao Mang fought, the more exhilarated he became, while the raiders grew increasingly fearful. Before long, he had dispatched four raiders.

Seeing Zhao Mang surrounded, Zhu Qiqi and the others abandoned their bows and rushed forward, but before they arrived, they witnessed the devastating scene and were stunned.

Zhao Mang’s strength was extraordinary—far beyond anything they had seen. They had thought him boastful before, even when he killed two men alone last time, but this display was overwhelming.

The raider bodies lay scattered, the scene gruesome. Zhao Mang wiped the blood from his blade in one smooth motion, then sheathed it with composure. His breathing remained steady; killing four raiders was effortless for him.

“Damn! Sergeant Zhao, you’re a beast!” Xiao Han’s voice came from behind, full of admiration. As a scout, he rarely joined battles but couldn’t help praising Zhao Mang’s prowess. Though he had heard of Zhao Mang’s feats against bandits before, seeing it firsthand was a different matter.

“Sergeant Zhao, your strength might rival Li Shiwu of the border garrison,” Xiao Han added.

Zhao Mang turned to him. “Li Shiwu? Who’s that?”

Xiao Han’s eyes gleamed mischievously as he smiled but didn’t answer directly. Instead, he spoke of the military achievements of these five raiders.

“These five Tibetan raiders included a squad leader. Sergeant Zhao, your feat today surely merits a promotion to fire team leader. No one expected that right after you arrived at Dunzi Peak beacon tower, you’d immediately face Tibetan raiders.”

Zhao Mang frowned, not pleased. “Could it be that before I took this post, no Tibetan raiders had appeared here?”

Hearing this, Xiao Han scratched his head. “I’m not sure. But none of the sergeants sent here before ever returned alive.”
