Her stepmother, Zhao Lan, suddenly stood before her!
She snatched up the phone pouch from the table, her voice cold, “I’ve been watching you for a long time. Not only are you flirting with men, but you’re even accepting gifts from them?”
Su Wan panicked and reached to grab it back. “Give it back to me!”
But Zhao Lan strode into the bathroom.
“What are you doing with my phone?” Su Wan had no choice but to set down her tray and follow her inside.
Zhao Lan sneered. “Su Wan, let me tell you, Meng Yanli is a big shot you can’t even touch. He’s about to get engaged soon. Don’t be delusional!”
“You know my boss?” Su Wan was stunned.
Zhao Lan’s expression faltered for a moment but quickly returned to calm as she said coldly, “That’s none of your concern. Just take care of yourself!”
Su Wan replied faintly, “I’ve never had any other thoughts about President Meng. Aunt Zhao, you don’t need to remind me.”
She hadn’t wanted to explain, but feared this woman would run to her father and cause trouble again, turning the family into chaos.
“That would be best!”
Zhao Lan said and turned to leave.
“Give me back my phone…”
The woman laughed coldly, “You’re just an employee of Meng Yanli. What right do you have to accept gifts from him?”
“Then I can return it to him. What do you mean by taking it away?”
Su Wan grew anxious, trying to snatch it back.
Zhao Lan was already out of the bathroom, waving the phone in her hand with a sly smile, “Aren’t you afraid I’ll tell everyone here that you’re trying to seduce the boss?”
Su Wan’s face turned pale.
She knew this woman was truly capable of doing that.
Seeing her stunned, Zhao Lan’s heavily made-up face broke into a triumphant smile.
Then she quickly walked away.
Back at the table, Meng Yanli looked at her with a puzzled gaze.
“What’s wrong?”
The girl’s delicate face looked a little downcast, as if she had suffered some blow.
“Oh, nothing. Let’s eat.”
Su Wan hid her feelings and sat down to eat.
After a short while, Meng Yanli received a call and hurriedly left.
Su Wan breathed a sigh of relief; she was really afraid the other party would notice the phone pouch was missing.
After finishing her meal, Su Wan immediately went to a phone store and bought a cost-effective model.
She had initially wanted to buy the very phone Meng Yanli gave her but it was too expensive, and she couldn’t bring herself to spend that much.
She planned to save up after moving out and repay President Meng for the phone.
In the afternoon,
Meng Yanli called Su Wan to his office.
“So, how is the phone I gave you? Still working well?”
Su Wan nodded awkwardly, “Yes, it’s quite good.”

“That’s good.”
Meng Yanli’s sharp eyes fixed on her slightly pale face; his voice was gentle, “You don’t look well. Are you sick?”
“No, no,” Su Wan said nervously under his gaze.
She knew this man was not easily fooled.
He had finally softened his attitude toward her, but she had lost the phone he gave her. He must be very angry.
Suddenly, her phone in her pocket rang.
Su Wan was dumbfounded.
Who could be calling at such a time?
If she took out the phone, she would definitely be exposed.
The man glanced at her indifferently, “Aren’t you going to answer?”
Su Wan quickly said, “President Meng, I’ll step out for a moment…”
“No need. Answer it right here.”
Meng Yanli felt this girl was acting strange.
“Well, I’d better go outside. I don’t want to disturb you here…”
“Hurry up,” the man frowned and urged.
Reluctantly, Su Wan nervously pulled out her phone.
Seeing that it was her best friend calling, Su Wan was annoyed.
“What’s the matter?”
“Since you said you were changing your phone, I just wanted to help test the call quality.”
“Thanks, I’ll hang up now.”
Ah, good intentions from a good friend had only made things worse, leaving her in an awkward spot.
Meng Yanli’s eyes darkened. “Speak. What’s going on?”
Su Wan explained the excuse she had prepared, “My friend really liked that phone model and helped me a lot before, so I gave it to her as a favor…”
“Oh, so you used the gift I gave you to repay a favor?”
The boss’s face looked very displeased.
Su Wan was so nervous her palms sweated.
Could it be she was about to get fired?
“I’m sorry, President Meng, I…”
Suddenly, the door was pushed open and Shen Zhou walked in.
Seeing the tense atmosphere, he raised an eyebrow and smiled, “Oh? What’s going on here? I feel like the air’s all wrong.”
He walked over to Meng Yanli’s chair and patted his shoulder. “Hey, she’s just a young girl. Don’t scare her with that cold attitude…”
Meng Yanli brushed his hand away calmly. “What are you here for again?”
Shen Zhou sat on the edge of the desk, grinning, “You stood me up for lunch. You better not miss dinner too.”
“I said I’d treat you another day. Didn’t say it was today.”
Meng Yanli rubbed his forehead; this guy was causing trouble again.
Su Wan took the opportunity to say, “President Meng, I’ll go make a coffee for President Shen.”

“You haven’t explained yourself yet. No leaving.”
Shen Zhou laughed, “I was just about to have a coffee. Go on, make me one.”
As Su Wan left, Meng Yanli pulled the man off the desk.
“You’re the vice president. Is sitting on the desk appropriate?”
Shen Zhou wasn’t angry and walked to the sofa, crossing his legs.
“You’re sometimes too serious! I don’t know what those women see in you.”
Every time this guy showed up at the company, female employees, married or not, acted like they’d been injected with adrenaline, their eyes nearly popping out.
One would think a celebrity tour was in town!
He considered himself good-looking, but whenever he was with Meng Yanli, he vanished into thin air.
“By the way, what’s your problem with that young girl? Honestly, she’s a good designer. Suddenly making her your assistant, she needs time to adjust…”
Meng Yanli said coolly, “It’s not about work.”
Shen Zhou suddenly perked up, leaning forward, ready to gossip.
“Look at you, all flustered. Don’t tell me you got rejected when confessing?”
“Say another word and get lost!”
He was already getting engaged, yet this guy still meddled in matchmaking.
He assigned Su Wan as his assistant with intention—to cultivate her. After all, she understood design and had a delicate mind; she would have great potential in the future.
An outsider could see that, especially Shen Zhou, his long-time friend.
He didn’t believe Meng Yanli’s excuse and held his opinion firmly. “If you really liked Su Wan, you could cancel your engagement. I know you’re not happy about it, but you owe that girl your life, and your mother likes her…”
“Enough. I’m not unhappy about anything,” Meng Yanli rolled his eyes.
He truly had no other thoughts about Su Wan. He wasn’t a hopeless romantic.
Besides, he didn’t mix business with pleasure.
Their relationship was purely professional, and the phone was for work convenience.
How could he make this guy understand?

After work, back at home,
Su Wan was about to go upstairs when she saw Su Mei on the phone.
Using the very model Meng Yanli had given her.
It was obvious the stepmother had turned and given the phone to her own daughter.
Su Wan stepped forward to snatch it back. “That’s my phone. Give it back!”
Su Mei dodged while glaring angrily, “Su Wan, you shameless woman, you dare fight me for the phone! Don’t you know Meng Yanli is…”
“…Su Mei!” The stepmother came downstairs, glaring fiercely at her daughter.
Su Mei immediately shut up, but looked at Su Wan with unwilling resentment.
With a woman’s intuition, Su Wan sensed the two were hiding something from her.
She looked at Su Mei calmly and asked, “What exactly do you want to say?”
