Chapter 6: Foolish and Wicked

The three bears nodded eagerly.
Xu Ying wiped away her tears and shifted her gaze to the arm of the bear leader speaking to her.
On the Gobi bear’s arm was a palm-sized wound, stained with blood, looking quite severe.
She stood up with a serious expression and said, “You’re injured. Let me dress your wound first—that’s my duty.”
Ning Zexi, who had been sidelined, witnessed the exchange between Xu Ying and the corsac fox and Gobi bear and began to understand. This young stationmaster, Xu Ying, seemed to have a remarkable rapport with these animals, able to comprehend each other’s thoughts.

“Stationmaster Xu, I brought a first aid kit. I’ll go get it for you!”
Ning Zexi swiftly fetched the medical kit.
“Thank you,” Xu Ying replied, her voice still tinged with a nasal tone.
Ning Zexi felt a pang in his heart and quietly assisted by handing over the medical supplies.
As Xu Ying treated the Gobi bear’s wound, she asked with concern, “Was your mate frightened by those two awful colleagues of mine?”
“How is the situation now?”
[She showed convulsive symptoms when scared, but she’s fine now. My little sister is watching over her.]
[I’m out here with my two brothers to catch the culprits, just in case those villains cause more trouble.]
The Gobi bear leader felt the young woman’s genuine kindness and sincerity as she carefully tended to his injury, sympathizing deeply with her plight.

Xu Ying gave the bear leader’s wound a simple dressing.
She said, “Brother Bear, your wound needs anti-inflammatory treatment. If you head northwest for about 150 kilometers, you’ll reach Rescue Station 028.”
“There, they have ample medicine and medical tools. Would you like to come with me?”
“Once we get to the rescue station, I’ll grab my equipment and ride my motorcycle back to check on Sister Bear before her delivery.”

Xu Ying blinked. “That’s not right. Intimidation is illegal.”

Xu Ying nodded, letting the young corsac fox cubs into the airline crate. She turned to see the three Gobi bears now on all fours, ready to sprint.
Bears are plantigrade animals, meaning they walk or run with their entire foot on the ground.
Their limbs are thick and powerful, with large paws, especially the front ones, which have five toes tipped with sharp claws. These features allow bears to support their weight steadily and move quickly while running.
[Little sister, what are you waiting for? Hop on! I’ll take you flying!]
Brother Bear called out to Xu Ying.
Without hesitation, Xu Ying secured the crate onto the bear’s back, climbed up, and wrapped her arms tightly around his neck.
She pointed to another Gobi bear and turned to Ning Zexi, “Brother, hurry up and get on—we’re about to leave!”
Ning Zexi, who couldn’t understand animal speech, was still bewildered.
He couldn’t grasp why, after a string of chattering between Xu Ying and the bears, they all climbed onto the bears’ backs.
“Go, go where?”
Swallowing nervously, Ning Zexi seemed to catch on and exclaimed in surprise, “You mean we’re going to ride bears to the rescue station?!”
Xu Ying tilted her head. “If not?”
“Stop dawdling! Even the Gobi bear is getting impatient with you!”
Flustered, Ning Zexi clumsily climbed onto the bear’s back and shut his eyes tightly.
At Brother Bear’s command, the three Gobi bears dashed forward wildly.
Riding a bear for the first time, Xu Ying felt a thrilling novelty—the bear’s fur was a genuine, soft leather saddle beneath her. She found the most aerodynamic pose, lying flat on the bear’s back with ease and grace.
Meanwhile, Ning Zexi was terrified, clutching Bear Two tightly, his livestream equipment capturing Xu Ying in action.
The moment viewers entered the livestream, they were shocked to see Xu Ying riding a bear!
“Wow, is this some desert movie? Riding a bear is so cool!”
“That girl is so tiny compared to that bear—such bravery!”
Occasional screams of fear from Ning Zexi echoed through the chat.
His voice had been strained all day and was now hoarse, his sharp cries turning into a raspy quack.
New viewers, puzzled, asked: “Why does the background sound like ducks quacking? Where are there ducks in the desert?”
“Streamer, pan your camera—where’s that duck coming from?”
Longtime fans in the chat burst out laughing at these messages!
The sight of Xu Ying racing across the desert on a bear delivered a stunning visual impact, and Ning Zexi’s livestream popularity skyrocketed—though he, eyes closed in fear, remained unaware of his channel’s sudden fame.

Temporary employees Tan Yuyan and Tan Ming sat around a table, eating self-heating hotpot while watching a downloaded movie on a tablet. Each had a bottled milk tea by their side.
This was considered a feast in the harsh desert conditions.
“Sis, are we really just going to abandon that Xu Ying in the desert?”
Tan Ming, his blond hair messy, bounced his crossed leg nonstop, speaking in a careless tone, “Now that we’re back, should we call the rescue team to get her?”
Tan Yuyan slurped the hotpot noodles and shot Tan Ming a sharp glare, “Are you stupid or what?”
“Rescue her, and then she goes and reports us?”
Tan Yuyan rolled her eyes, “Don’t tell me you actually fancy Xu Ying?”
“That stubborn girl’s only good-looking; what else?”
Tan Ming chuckled, rubbing his nose, “Isn’t it just because she looks cute?”
“Xu Ying clearly isn’t the type to stay home quietly raising kids, washing, and cooking. She’s unruly and hard to control. What’s the point of marrying her? To worship her like a deity?”
Tan Yuyan scowled, “And she’s a female college student—very proud, eyes always looking upwards.”
“Women these days are more educated—harder to fool.”
—“Well, it’s been three days now, and the person’s dead. Talking about it is pointless.”
Tan Ming shrank his neck, feeling guilty, “Sis, since she’s dead, we won’t get into trouble, right?”
